Dena Hutton MA, LPC-S
Compassionate, effective therapy
for individuals and couples
Services provided both
in person and telehealth
Hello! Glad you are here.
Do you find yourself repeating patterns in your life, marriage or other relationships? Do you feel stuck or powerless to change? I can help. I believe deeply that change is possible for anyone, and it begins with a safe and accepting environment to explore the barriers to happiness.
For many of us, the coping skills and self concepts we learned in our early years no longer serve us well as adults. I utilize a trauma informed and results-oriented approach to help you identify and dismantle patterns which no longer work, develop new tools, and experience new ways of relating to yourself and to the important people in your life. I provide warm, engaging therapy supporting emotional connection, healthy relationships, clear and effective communication, and the achievement of personal goals.
Your sessions will be interactive, directive and productive, rooted in honest observations – it will NEVER consist of simply head nodding.About me
I aim to be the kind of therapist I would seek out myself: someone who builds genuine connections with clients through warmth and empathy, while also providing honest feedback and encouraging exploration of personal and relationship challenges that can block growth and happiness. I can help you cut through the all the clutter to clarify underlying sources of disconnect or discontent in your life.
I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas, holding a BS in Communications from UT Austin, and an MA in Professional Counseling from Texas State. I've been in private practice over 24 years.
I'm not a native Austinite but after 3 decades here it's definitely home. I have two grown children, and an ever rotating roster of foster pups.
Therapy Services
Individuals
Using a trauma informed, attachment based and solution focused orientation; I partner with you to move past negative emotions, overcome difficult life changes, get unstuck, and heal. Together we will move from surviving to thriving mentally and emotionally. You control the pace - we won’t go anywhere nor do anything that you’re not ready for. However, I will invite you to push yourself. You will be surprised by what you are capable of.
Couples
I encourage couples to grow insight and awareness around about stuck patterns, I help both partners each take responsibility for their internal processes and external actions and reactions that contribute to the overall dynamic, and to do so with love, compassion, and new skills we nurture and explore together.
I guide you to take risks to develop greater intimacy and a more vibrant relationship, where you heal old wounds and show up as your best selves contributing to each other’s growth.
EMDR
(Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an effective, evidence-based therapy that helps free clients from painful memories, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, negative self beliefs and other disturbances rooted in exposure to trauma. Distressing thoughts are often dysfunctionally stored memories that become "stuck" because the brain is not able to process the sounds, emotions, images, or body sensations during a highly stressful experience. These unprocessed, raw memories are easily triggered and may replay over and over again in our mind and body, causing us distress. Such memories can have a lasting, negative effect that interferes with the way a person sees the world and the way they relate to other people
The EMDR process helps you to experience deep healing of painful thoughts, emtional reactions, feelings, and memories.

How often do I come to therapy?
I will provide recommendations for a visit frequency that best fits your needs once we begin to work together. Most individuals come to therapy weekly or biweekly. The goal is to come more frequently in the beginning and attend less often as you begin to use the tools learned in sessions.
How do I get started?
Many people can feel overwhelmed with the idea of therapy and uncertain of how to begin. I help make the process easier by offering a free 15 minute consultation to determine if therapy together is a good fit and I will provide additional referrals if needed. A detailed intake appointment helps each person to realize their personal goals for growth and what they would like to gain from counseling. Fill out the contact form below or give me a call.
What are your hours?
I schedule appointments on various weekday mornings, afternoons and evenings to accommodate different needs. Appointments are available both in person and via telehealth.
